Springtime & Flower Essences

Happy Spring. This time of year is my absolute favorite: witnessing flowers emerge from their slumber. The days feel longer and brighter, birds are chirping, and I often joke with colleagues that this is the time of year when no one needs therapy! Something about the sun's return makes us all feel like we can put our problems to rest. What is your favorite thing about this season?

As the flowers begin to bloom again, I thought this month would be an excellent time to talk about flower essences. Many of you come to my practice just for essence work, and I am aware that many of you have no idea what they are or how to work with them. Let’s change that!

Flower essences are liquid remedies made from the energy of living plants and stones. When we work with essences, we engage the energy meridians in our bodies, similar to acupuncture, to restore the flow of qi.

Think about all of the things you’ve experienced in life that make you who you are today. Some of those experiences are still deeply held in our bodies, contributing to patterns that feel unhelpful or outdated in the present. Essences help us explore and release old energy and emotional patterns stored in our bodies and subconscious minds so that we can better access meaningful change and choice in our lives.

I tried my first flower essence 9 years ago, with a flower called baby blue eyes. At the time, a practitioner told me about essences while I was navigating some distressing dreams. I shared with them that in my dreams, I was experiencing being attacked by a male figure I couldn’t place. After taking the baby blue eyes essence on the first evening before sleep, I had a dream about a kind man with blue eyes handing me a flower from a flower field. When I woke up, I realized that was the first dream I’d ever had where a man was kind to me. I later discovered that the baby blue eyes essence supports the wounded father archetype. This is exactly how essences work with our subconscious.

Flower essences are generally taken under the tongue, 5 drops 5 times per day. They come in a small glass bottle, similar to an herbal tincture, and include the essence of the plant or stone you’re working with, water, honey, and trace amounts of alcohol that act as a preservative. Unlike herbal tinctures, flower essences have no contraindications as their chemical constituents are primarily water.

For best results, take your essence when you have a quiet moment to reflect. Bonus point if you bust a journal out. Ready to find your essence? Here are a few ways we can work together:
